Who Are We?

Neighborhood Preservation Coalition (NPC) is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in October 2020 in response to the urgent need to stop quarry activity in Clay, Alabama. Our Mission: To educate and help protect residents and local businesses when their property, natural resources, and public health and safety are threatened by the adverse and often irreversible effects of quarry mining.

The City of Clay, Alabama with a population of nearly 10,000 was incorporated in June, 2000. The City has a Mayor, City Council government, and a City Manger. Clay’s City Hall is located on Old Springville Road in Birmingham, Alabama. Clay is adjacent to the cities of Trussville and Pinson, and portions of the City are located in agriculturally zoned, unincorporated Jefferson County.

Clay is unique in that it is rich with fishing lakes and wetlands, abundant wildlife, mountainous regions, and clean air and water. The City of Clay’s website boasts these natural resources along with the fact that the currently proposed quarry site (Butler Mountain) is the highest peak in Jefferson County, Alabama.

There is a place for mining and NPC is not opposed to mining in its proper place. In fact, the State of Alabama has a proud mining and iron ore history. However, NPC is adamantly opposed to mining in populated areas rich with natural resources and thriving neighborhoods. Industrial mining should not take place less than 2-3 miles from schools, a senior citizens facility, daycares, a post office, and a public library. Mining traffic should never intersect with school buses and commuters on a day-to-day basis for years perhaps even decades.

Join us in the fight to protect Clay. A community has the inherent right to decide its own destiny and to fight threats to its health and safety.
